What's special about hiking in Aysen?

Aysen is undoubtedly the next big thing in Patagonia hiking.

While Torres del Paine grabs the hiking headlines, its crowded trails means that it can often feel like a victim of its own success. Aysen is the antidote: its scenery is every bit as spectacular as Torres del Paine, but with a fraction of the visitors. This is the place to feel like a pioneer: in Aysen, trails that would be busy in other destinations often have just a handful of hikers on them. On longer treks, you can walk for an entire day through valleys and over mountain passes and barely encounter another soul.

With excellent infrastructure, good connections to Santiago and a world-class selection of day hikes and multi-day treks, Aysen's mountains are waiting for hikers to walk their trails.

Day hikes in Aysen

Day hiking in Cerro Castillo National Park

Cerro Castillo National Park, easily accessed from Aysen's main gateway city of Coyhaique is dominated by craggy pinnacles, snow-thick forests, crystal glaciers and bright turquoise lagoons. It has several excellent day hikes.

The first hike is to Laguna Cerro Castillo passes through lenga forest for views of the Ibanez valley and up to the famous blue lake under the Cerro Castillo peak: perfect for a brisk dip! This hike can also be done on horseback as a day ride.

Another hike is the Neozelandes (New Zealander) hike to Porteadores camp for staggering vistas across the Cerro Palo, Cerro Chocolate, Punta Duff and Cerro Castillo peaks.

Day hiking in Patagonia National Park

Patagonia National Park has half a dozen wonderful day hiking trails. Some of the best are in the central Chacabuco sector of the park, including the Lagunas Altas trail, a 14 mile (23 km) hike that takes you to a high altitude plateau with lakes and lenga forest, and the slightly shorter Aviles Valley hike.

Around Jeinimeni, a great day hike takes you past the imposing rock formations of Piedra Clavada and Moon Valley, and a collection of indigenous rock paintings.

Finally, in Tamango you can combine a boat trip along the Cochrane River with day hikes of different lengths.

Hiking to the Aviles Valley, I saw scores of wild guanaco and ate my picnic enjoying the dramatic mountain views at the hanging bridge. It's the kind of day on the trail that Patagonia excels in.

Day hiking around Laguna San Rafael National Park

A couple of Aysen’s best day hikes can be found close to Laguna San Rafael National Park (as well as being easily accessed from the Marble Caves).

The Leones Valley hike involves a six mile (10 km) hike through a beautiful and empty valley, to a lake, where you catch a boat to take you to the face of the Leones Glacier, where you can spend an afternoon scrambling at its base.

If you want to get even close to the ice, walk through the forest to a glacial moraine, where you can strap on your crampons to go ice hiking on the surface of the Exploradores Glacier, exploring its deep blue ice caves.

Day hiking in Queulat National Park

Along the northern sector of the Carretera Austral, Queulat National Park is known for its primeval scenery. Deep forests shade the moss-covered undergrowth, and lakes and hanging glaciers remain untouched. It has three well-marked day hikes.

The Bosque Encantado (enchanted forest) hike climbs through fuschias, along the edge of the Cascada river to a glacial lake complete with bobbing icebergs and wonderful views to the surrounding forest. The Mirador del Ventisquero trail winds through the forest to the hanging glacier, surrounded by waterfalls. The Los Pumas trail climbs steeply through the natural woodland, and in its last stretch reaches the Los Pumas Lagoon.

Villa O'Higgins

Villa O'Higgins lies at the southernmost end of the Carretera Austral, sandwiched between mountains, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Argentinian border close to Los Glaciares National Park, and the largest lake in Argentina. You'll need a guide to hike any of the full day hikes in this area.

Among the hike here are the Cerro Submarino hike climbs to Cerro Submarino Glacier and brings spectacular views on a clear day. The Cerro Altavista hike is a hilly walk within the woods, with views of small lakes along the way. Finally, a truly off-the-beaten-track trail leads to Tigre Glacier, where you'll spot shapes on the rocks carved by the receding glacier.

Multi-day treks in Aysen

Cerro Castillo National Park: Horquetas Trek

Cerro Castillo National Park's trails can be challenging and remote, but the rewards are unmatched. Spend days up in the mountains, breathing in the clear air and camping under rocky peaks.

The classic multi-day trek is known as the Horquetas Trek, or simply the Cerro Castillo National Park Trek. It crosses two passes and summits Morro Negra with an additional hike up to the Cerro Palo area. Along the way, the trail takes in two stunning glacial lakes, and wild mountain views across the border into Argentina The hike ends in Cerro Castillo Village, where you can continue south into Aysen or return to Coyhaique.

Patagonia National Park: Jeinimeini to Aviles Trek

This is a fantastic remote four-day hike that takes in two of Aysen's national parks: trekking from the little-visited Jeinimeni National Park into Patagonia National Park, camping along the way.

This is a wild hike with numerous river crossings, thick forests and remote glaciers, passing from the technicolour rocks of the Jeinimeini reserve into the dryer steppe landscape in the Chacabuco valley.

The trail from Jeinimeni is a classic piece of Patagonian wilderness: bushwhacking, river crossings, thick forests and a climb to a windy mountain pass. It's a great place to feel brilliantly alone in the landscape.

Soler Valley: Aysen Wilderness Trek

While any multi-day trek in Aysen is remote by regular standards, the Soler Valley trek really  takes you deep into the heart of the region, in an area bordering Laguna San Rafael National Park and the Northern Patagonian Ice Field.

Supported by horse, the trek follows the shores of Lago Plomo and Lago Bertrand to the Soler Valley, with constant views of the snowy mountains. Although more moderate in pace than the other Aysen treks, the views are never less than stunning, especially as you climb the valley through the forest, to marble peaks and views of half a dozen shimmering glaciers.

Unlike Torres del Paine or Los Glaciares, where you might choose to base yourself in just one main location for hiking, Aysen is the ideal multi-centre destination, with a wide variety of places to stay along the Carretera Austral from where you can explore the diversity of this region.

This lovely park is much less traveled than other Patagonia destinations and I enjoyed the solitude on the trails. My most memorable moment was when I spotted a puma from a hot tub! Read the full review

I would fully recommend Cerro Castillo to people. It is easy to get to and shockingly gorgeous but without nearly as many people as other parts of Patagonia. Definitely worth the visit. Read the full review

Our guides were fun, helpful and informative. The national park was breathtaking. The trail was so much fun. Straddling trees to cross rivers, scrambling down snowy mountain passes, setting up camp each night and only seeing one other group the whole time! We were also really well fed! Read the full review

The trip across Lago O'Higgins on the 'Quetru' was spectacular. Other highlights in Aysen... Lagunas Atlas hike was beautiful and solitary - we only saw one other couple all day.

The scenery is breathtaking everywhere: high jagged mountains covered with hanging glaciers, fantastic pinnacled ridges, from which huge screes fall to the timber line, imposing rock towers, enormous rounded granite bluffs, vast alluvial valleys with braided rivers, blue lakes and lagoons, precipitous gorges and water-courses.

Hiking in Aysen: FAQs

  • How do I get to Aysen?

Aysen is readily accessible by air from Chile's capital Santiago, with flights to the regional hub of Balmaceda airport, near Aysen's main city, Coyhaique

For detailed information see our Getting to Aysen page.

  • Do I need a guide?

On some of the day hikes, a guide is not necessary but most of the routes in Aysen are remote, with no mountain rescue and often on private land, so having a local guide definitely pay off. A guide will give you peace of mind as well as access to some out-of-bounds areas. As a rule, most trails in Aysen are not as well-marked in comparison to other areas such as Torres del Paine.

  • Do I need to bring my own trekking equipment?

Coyhaique has shops where you can buy new gear, but it is advisable to bring your own boots and rucksack because you are likely to get a much better fit than those on offer locally.

If you are arranging a hike or trek with us, we will provide a detailed packing list when you book.
