Aysen is a little-known region of Patagonia whose endless beauty and glacier filled horizons are becoming increasingly difficult to keep secret. We set off to Aysen to better understand how those on the ground feel about tourism growth in the region and how Swoop and our travellers can be a positive force by adventuring to Aysen.
We believe that Swoop has a responsibility to understand the concerns and elevate the voices of our friends and partners in Patagonia. While travelling we spoke to our partners about tourism, the economy, conservation, culture, and what makes Aysen so special.
John Hauf - Lago Plomo
We are not about conserving the land just to put it in a box and not let anybody access it
Mary Vidal - Cerro Castillo
If we have tourists that see the importance of the natural areas […] I think the local government will see that value too
Ian Farmer - Coyhaique
Connection with local people is very positive for both the tourists and the local people
On a recent trip to Patagonia, one of the local guides we work with stopped me as I was asking about business that season: "Harriet, remember this is Aysen, we must talk about friends, family and personal matters before we get to business". By understanding and embracing that family and friends are more important to the local people in this area than being on time and getting things done, you'll get so much more out of your trip.

Aysen is Chile’s third largest region in terms of area, covering 41,300 square miles (106,900km²), but it is also its least populated. This feeling of wilderness and space is likely the first thing people mention when talking about Aysen, but that would do it an injustice. There is a huge spectrum of wildlife, landscapes, and people all of which make Aysen such a fantastic place to explore.
Aysen has some of the most spectacular scenery in Patagonia but what really struck me is how diverse the landscapes are. I felt like I had visited Canada, Scotland, Italy, & Switzerland all in the space of a few days.
