  • Spring brings blooming wildflowers and the reopening of roads and accommodation for the new season
  • Summer has up to 16 hours of daylight and the warmest temperatures (along with the strongest winds) and the best time for hikers
  • Autumn is perfect for photography and views, with intense colours on the trees, but early snows can sometimes affect hiking trails
  • Winter sees Aysen completely shut down for the season, as it waits for the snows to spass and spring to arrive

  • Hiking trails reopen after the winter, but lingering snow in high places can make access to some remote spots an adventure
  • Accommodation reopens after the closed season, ready to welcome new guests, while access returns along the more distant sections of the Carretera Austral

Weather: Temperature settling between 47-68F (8–20C). Northern Aysen can be quite rainy at this time and there's the chance of snow in the mountains.

Daylight: With 12-14 hours of daylight there's plenty of opportunity for long days exploring.

Advantages: The start of the season is the quietest time to visit Aysen, as accommodation opens fresh for visitors

Things to consider: Athough it's spring it can still get very cold at times, especially with the windchill, so ensure you bring plenty of layers.

Summer in Aysen

  • The best time of year for fine weather, with warm summer sunshine and fresh Patagonian winds
  • Long summer days give the advantage of hiking long into the evening
  • This is the high season but in Aysen that's a relative term, so booking accommodation isn't usually a problem
  • Weather: With temperatures up to 79F (28C) it can feel hot during the day, especially when hiking, but summer winds can still carry a sharp edge

    Daylight: Aysens's longest day is in December, with 16 hours of daylight.

    Advantages: Take your time on the trails and enjoy daylight long into the evening. Warm temperatures mean more comfortable hiking even in the strong winds.

    Things to consider: The relatively new tourist scene in Aysen is a world away from busy destinations like Torres del Paine, so you'll still often feel like you have the place to yourself

  • Autumn brings truly spectacular colours of the leaves, making this a wonderful season for photographers
  • Long sunrises and sunsets paint the sky pink and orange
  • There is mostly fine weathewith some rain, but be prepared for the chance of snow as the days shortening and temperatures start to cool

Weather: Temperatures settle between 47-68F (8-20C), but conditions can sometimes be unpredictable. Be prepared for frosty mornings and even snow as the season progresses.

Daylight: With around hours of daylight, the days definitely feel shorter, but the long colourful sunsets are a one of Aysen's great joys

Advantages: Hiking among the Fall colours is a real Aysen highlight

Things to consider: Towards the end of the season, accommodation starts to close to get ready for winter and early snow can shut some hiking trails.

  • This is Aysen's closed season for visitors
  • Hiking trails and many accommodation options close until spring
  • Remote parts of the Carretera Austral become harder to access, especially public transport

Weather: Temperatures frequently drop below freezing, reaching a maximum of 55F (13C). They can be heavy snowfall in many places. 

Daylight: At the height of winter, expect just nine hours of daylight. 

Advantages: The time to plan your Aysen trip for a more welcoming time of year. 

Things to consider: For hiking in this season, consider heading south to experience Torres del Paine in winter snow, where the W Trek remains open but the park is almost empty of visitors
