Laguna Esmeralda Hike

Laguna Esmeralda, an ancient glacial cirque with its emerald green waters, offers one of the most impressive hiking experiences in the region. Your transfer will take you into the rugged hills surrounding Ushuaia, with an east-to-west section of the Andes, distinct from the range's usual north-to-south orientation.

Hike an out-and-back trail, which takes 3 to 5 hours to complete, allowing time for photos and relaxation by the lagoon. This popular hiking destination, frequented by locals, is open year-round and has beauty in every season. After your hike, you'll be driven back to Ushuaia, with a box lunch included.

Helicopter Overflights

Take to the skies for a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter ride over Ushuaia, with options for 15, 30, or 45-minute flights. Lifting off from the bay, you’ll soar above dramatic valleys and peaks, taking in stunning panoramas of glaciers, forests, and winding rivers. Depending on your flight duration, you may cross into Tierra del Fuego's more remote mountain ranges, where hidden lakes and untouched wilderness stretch to the horizon.

For the longer flights, there's a special touch—you’ll savour a glass of champagne, returning to your hotel with a whole new perspective on the world's southernmost city.

Flights must be booked in advance and will be rescheduled if conditions are deemed not to be safe for flying on the day of operations. A full refund is given if the activity is cancelled due to adverse weather

Helicopter overflights of Ushuaia and the surrounding mountains are possible. While the experience is breathtaking, we are worried about the carbon emissions and Swoop will contribute accordingly to our conservation fund to help offset the impact. We’d ask you strongly to consider hiking to these beautifully pristine locations, as opposed to flying in and out, but understand this may not be possible for everyone.

Tierra del Fuego National Park Hike

Start with a hotel pick-up and transfer to Tierra del Fuego National Park. After a brief drive, you'll stop at panoramic viewpoints with your guide before continuing to the starting point of your hike. Enjoy about two to four hours of hiking on several short trails through the park.

The adventure concludes with a super photo stop at Lapataia Bay - the end of the Pan American Highway - before heading back to Ushuaia. You can do this excursion in the morning, afternoon or as a full day depending on availability.

Vinciguerra Hike

You'll be picked up from your hotel at a time to be confirmed. From there, start the potentially toughest day trail in Ushuaia. The hike typically takes around 8 hours, is well-loved by outdoor enthusiasts, so you may encounter other trekkers along the way.

The trail offers eye-catching views and a satisfying circuit. After completing your hike, you'll be returned to your hotel at the end of the day.

This is probably the toughest day hike in and around Ushuaia so make sure you are well rested before taking it on.

A delightful hike through the Fuegian forest and beyond the treeline, where in just half a day you will be rewarded with incredible panoramas of the city of Ushuaia, the surrounding mountains, the Beagle Channel, and the National Park.

This mountain stands out for its mystique and history, strongly linked to the time of the Presidio in Ushuaia. It is also a very characteristic point of the city and is frequented by locals.

Laguna Turquesa & Carabajal Valley

This scenic and demanding day hike takes you to the stunning Turquesa Lagoon, where the blue waters contrast beautifully with the rugged Patagonian landscape. On the way back, enjoy sweeping views of Valle Carbajal, a vast glacial valley stretching far into the distance.

Martial Glacier

This self-guided hike offers a steady climb from the base of the old ski resort just outside Ushuaia. The trail moves through forests, where the treeline thins to reveal open ridges and a rougher path underfoot. Gaining height, the view unfolds—Ushuaia below, the Beagle Channel stretching beyond, and peaks rising to the north. The final approach is a mix of loose rock and patches of ice, leading to the glacier’s edge. It’s a straightforward but rewarding route, taking around 2–3 hours round trip, ideal for those wanting a taste of Tierra del Fuego’s backcountry without venturing too far.

A 4-hour guided hike that takes you closer to the glacier is also available.

Your excursion ends at a Mountain Dome, where a regional fireside dinner awaits—hearty, warming, and perfect for toasting to another day at the End of the World. With long summer evenings stretching out before you, there’s no better way to soak up the magic of Tierra del Fuego with family, friends and other travellers.

I was blown away by the variety of activities available in the region. A real highlight for me was the Turquesa Lagoon and Carbajal Valley trek. To be able to have high mountain trail conditions just about 20 minutes driving from Ushuaia is something that you can't have in many other places in the world. The views, the lagoon and everything about this hike is unique!

Day Excursion FAQs

  • How do I book one of these excursions?

Swoop's Patagonia Experts will combine these excursions into a tailor-made itinerary for you that includes hotels and transfers. We can arrange anything from public buses and camping to private vans and luxury spa lodges. Give us a call on the number at the top of the page and we will talk you through your options.

  • Can you explain the difficulty scale in more detail?

Due to the sheer range of excursions available in Patagonia and this region, it is hard to have an exact scale so we recommend speaking to your Sales or CX Representative in the first instance.

However, the following is a general guide for the levels of activity which you will see referenced on the individual excursions:

Easy - Vehicle/boat-based tours and a wide range of activities that at their max involve 1-2 hours of walking or gentle exercise.

Moderate - Involves 2-5 hours of hiking or more physical activities such as kayaking, horse riding, rafting etc.

Hard - You need to be able to be active for a full day and previous experience or carrying a day pack may be required.

Advanced - Challenging full days of activity, experience is necessary and trekkers will need to carry an 18kg pack.

Extreme - Must be highly experienced at this activity and prepared for extreme weather, heavy loads and Type 2 fun.

Most of the excursions advertised will fall into the Easy and Moderate categories. Some will straddle between two categories and will be marked if so.

  • What if the weather intervenes?

There is of course a good chance the weather may play a part in any Patagonian excursion but we will work with our local partners to assess things and communicate other options if required.

  • Can I just book the excursions and take care of the hotel myself?

Swoop puts together the entire package and is not able to book the excursions by themselves.
