The small upmarket resort town of Villa La Angostura sits on the northern finger of Lake Nahuel Huapi in Argentina's Lake District. It's a very picturesque place full of wooden alpine architecture, and offers a glimpse of what Bariloche used to look like before it began to grow (and has almost as many high end chocolate shops. The town has some excellent restaurants and a well-run tourist office. 

The town attracts local tourists year-round. In the winter, nearby Cerro Bayo is a boutique-sized ski and snowboarding resort. In the summer there are plenty of hiking opportunities, including to the waterfall of Cascada Río Bonito and through the woods to the blue waters of Laguna Verde. A particular highlight is the pocket-sized Arrayanes National Park on the Quetrihue Peninsula. The park is a half-day 12km hike from the town, but it's a popular activity to hire bikes for the trip along the well-marked trail. Locals like to recount the (sadly apocryphal) story that rust red bark of the arrayán trees here were the original inspiration for the forest in the Disney film Bambi. 

Villa La Angostura is 83km north of Bariloche, a 75-minute drive along RN40. The same road continues north to San Martín de los Andes, a further two hours and 108km away, following the tremendously scenic Route of the Seven Lakes (Rua de los Siete Lagos)
