Ushuaia is the access town to the Beagle Channel and the great hiking and kayaking opportunities available in Tierra del Fuego. Many travellers stay here before going to see the island's many sea lion colonies and penguin rookeries, or hopping off on a 2 to 3 day kayaking trip around Gable Island in the Beagle Channel.

Antarctic Port

Ushuaia is even better known as the port from which most Antarctic cruises depart for Antarctic sea adventures of up to 20 days. The cruises first cross the Drake Passage before reaching the South Shetland Islands or they sail via South Georgia and Sandwich Islands.

Instead of setting out from the port of Ushuaia, some cruises start off in the Falkland Islands, spending a day or two enjoying its markets, restaurants, flora and fauna, before heading towards the coast of Antarctica. Other ships instead offer a fly and cruise option, with flights from the Chilean town of Punta Arenas straight through to an Antarctic research base on King George Island.
