About the Glacier
- Named after Uppsala University (spelt at the time with only one 'p'), in Sweden - the University sponsored some of the first glaciological exploration of the region
- Upsala is well known for its rapid retreat over recent decades and is commonly used as evidence of global warming
- Is even bigger than the more famous and accesible Perito Moreno
Where is it?
- Upsala is a large valley glacier found in Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park ("The Glaciers" National Park)
- It flows from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which also feeds the famous Perito Moreno glacier
- The glacier's terminus is at the shore of Lago Argentino
How to see it:
- Great for day visits, it can be combined with a tour of a nearby Patagonian estancia from which you can go for a guided hike or 4x4 adventure into the mountains to panoramic viewpoints.
- A popular destination for travellers, it is served by the hotels of El Chalten and the airport in El Calafate
- Incorporate it into a broader exploration of Los Glaciares and Patagonia
