Montevideo is Uruguay's capital city and home to one of South America's most important ports. It overlooks the Río de la Plata, the largest river/estuary (depending on who you ask) in the world. Among a host of historical buildings and cultural offerings, tango shows included, other points of interest are Independence Square, the Old Town, the port market, and the Arts District. The closet airport is Carrasco International Airport, a 40 minute drive from the city.
