Lago del Desierto

This stunning lake is found in Los Glaciares National Park and is usually reached in around 90 minutes via the road north of El Chalten, a popular climbers town established in 1985.

The view from Lago del Desierto is really beautiful and gives another perspective of the park's famous granite peak, Cerro FitzRoy, which was first noted on 2nd March 1877 by Perito Moreno. He named it in hour of Robert FitzRoy who chartered large parts of the Patagonian coast.

Lago del Desierto is a particularly good spot for seeing Patagonia's native flora and fauna, including the red-headed Magellanic woodpecker and the pan del indio, a bright orange fungus.
