Standing close to Cerro Fitz Roy, on the edge of the South Patagonian Ice Field, Cerro Torre stands at 3,102 metres. This is one of the highest peaks in the region, and it is a very challenging one to climb. Shrouded in controversial claims of ascent, the first undisputed ascent was in 1974.

Where is it?

• Cerro Torre stands amid the peaks, glaciers, rivers and lagoons of Los Glaciares (The Glaciers) National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
• Close to the Patagonian mountain village of El Chalten, and 4 hours by bus from the airport of El Calafate

How to see it:

• Many of the treks from El Chalten take you to view-points of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy, including several day-hikes, as well longer routes, such as the Huemul Circuit

How to get there:

• Staying in the nearby town of El Chalten, there are many day-hikes which give you great views of Cerro Torre
• There is a much more challenging route which takes you up onto the Ice Cap to get much closer to the mountain and see it from a different angle, as part of a demanding expedition
• You could also make it part of a trekking tour, combining the peaks and glaciers of Los Glaciares with the equally stunning landscapes of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile
