Life Before Swoop

I grew up between North West England and North East Scotland, and I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors. Growing up, my brother and I were obsessed with the Discovery Channel, especially shows like Globe Trekker and The Diceman. These programs fueled my dreams of exploring the world.

I realised early on that languages would be my ticket to adventure, so at 18, I moved to London to study languages and film. My year abroad took me to Chile, where I hitchhiked across the country and fell deeply in love with its landscapes and culture.

After university, I spent ten months working in China. Whilst backpacking there, a chance encounter led me to an incredible opportunity: a job as a trekking guide in Patagonia—the one part of Chile I hadn't yet explored. I couldn't resist; I bought a one-way ticket and ventured into the wilds of Patagonia! After 2 incredible years of exploring Patagonia as a trekking guide, I next headed to San Pedro de Atacama and guided there for two seasons, before heading to live in the Chilean Lake District.

In 2021, I returned to the UK and tried out a few different jobs, but I couldn't shake my love for travel and my passion for Chile. Fast forward to 2024, and Swoop gave me the dream opportunity: now, I get to talk about my favourite place every day, helping others to discover this amazing destination.

My Patagonia Experience

My journey to Patagonia began with my first day working at a luxury hotel in Torres del Paine. I'll never forget the awe I felt upon first seeing Lake Toro and the majestic views of the Paine massif. Working as a trekking guide in this iconic park was an extraordinary experience.

I witnessed the park's transformation through every season, each with its own unique charm, and met thousands of visitors from around the world, sharing in their wonder as they experienced this natural marvel for the first time.

I also had the incredible opportunity to see wildlife up close, including the majestic Andean Condor, elusive pumas, and the Ñandu, among others.

Why I love Patagonia

Patagonia's unique allure comes from its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, unpredictable weather, remarkable wildlife, and vibrant culture. From the indigenous people who thrived, to intrepid explorers like Bruce Chatwin who ventured to the end of the world, to the gauchos who call it home today and the daring mountaineers drawn to its jagged peaks.

Having hiked and camped throughout Torres del Paine, explored the vast landscapes of Los Glaciares National Park, and spent time in the tranquil Chilean Lake District—Patagonia taught me to embrace a slower pace of life and to find joy in nature and solitude.

Its unique charm has a way of drawing me back time and time again.

The Next Adventure

There are so many incredible spots to choose from, but my next adventure would be to Dientes de Navarino. This remote and less-travelled destination offers stunning, untouched landscapes with rugged peaks and pristine lakes that capture the essence of Patagonia’s wild and rugged beauty!
