Set high up on a hill, surrounded by rolling countryside, this hotel looks out onto the channels and snow capped volcanoes surrounding Chiloé Island. Offering daily guided excursions, locally sourced and home cooked food, an in house spa and beautiful grounds, this hotel gives you a place of incredible peace and tranquility to relax after an exciting day experiencing the island.
The hotel offers a select choice of tailored excursions designed to reveal the magic of the island. These include both half and full-day excursions, by foot, horse, bike and kayak. Guests can visit the UNESCO World Heritage churches, famous for their wooden shingles and unique design, and enjoy wandering through local markets where everything from fresh fish to handmade textiles are on display.
Bird watching is a popular option as the property is located next to wetlands, which are home to a variety of migratory birds. In addition, you can book exclusive trips through the fiords and canals on the hotel's traditional vessel, the 'Williche'.
There are two full-day boat trips to choose from, both of which provide an astonishing exhibition of the beauty of the area, geologically and culturally, and its wildlife. The first excursion begins at the magical town of Tenaun and sails through the waterways between the islands of the archipelago, with visits to the only heritage church on the island, the original palafitos (stilt houses), and the Don Checo Museum. You're then able to choose between kayaking, hiking, or a Zodiac ride.
The second excursion starts with a visit to the island of Chelín, then follows a woodland hike before heading over to the island of Quehui. The area's unique geography allows you to sail to the heart of the island by way of the Pindo Estuary’s calm waters. Here, you can kayak, sail the shoreline by Zodiac boat, or bicycle on nearby trails to cliffs with gorgeous views.
Tierra Chiloé Hotel
Many different cycling trails are possible from the hotel, with levels varying from relaxed to difficult. Recommendations can be made regarding intensity and particular areas you'd like to visit before you set out.
The rides begin from the hotel, and take you through the village of San Jose, then into woods and open fields, and past the church and cemetery. The entire path is unpaved with a privileged view of the coastal mountains.
Horse-riding from Tierra Chiloé Hotel
You can enjoy a variety of horseback rides perfect for close-up exploration of the island and hotel surroundings, in the company of the hotel’s horseman. The smaller Chilote horses are the perfect ride for the island’s geography.
The Village of San Jose excursion is an easy half-day ride through heart of the village, with unique views of the Andes Mountains. The medium-difficulty Shipyard excursion begins on the beach, with potential dolphin sightings, and incorporates fields, farmland, and the countryside. On the Pellul – Quento Beach excursion, more experienced riders travel to Quento Beach, with a panoramic view toward Castro, the capital of Chiloé.
For me, the gem of the hotel is the ‘Wiliche’, the wooden boat. Whilst out on her, we pulled up alongside a small, local fishing boat to see what they were catching. We were offered some of their catch – local mussels and clams. Later in the afternoon the captain cooked these up with white wine, garlic and onions – delicious and so fresh.

Tierra Chiloé is a welcoming lodge on the island of Chiloé, on the coast of Northern Patagonia. Sitting on 10 hectares of land where the sea meets the countryside, the hotel overlooks the islands of the southern archipelago.
San José is the closest village, whilst the island's capital, Castro, is 18km away. The nearest airport is Mocopulli – Castro (MHC), 30mins drive from the hotel. Commercial flights from Chile’s capital, Santiago (2.5hr flight time) land here several times a week. The airport at Puerto Montt (PMC) receives several flights daily from Santiago (2hr flight) and is approximately 3hrs drive from the hotel.
Tierra Chiloé is open from spring through until the end of fall (1st Oct to 31st April). It's closed during the southern hemisphere winter months (May–September).
Food is inspired by the traditional cuisine of Chiloé and a variety of local produce is sourced, including succulent oysters, farm fresh eggs and daily catch from the surrounding waters. One of Chiloé’s most traditional dishes, Curanto, is served - a delicious stew of shellfish, fish, potatoes and meat, cooked on hot stones in the ground.
Guests can also enjoy an extensive list of Chilean wines, artisan beers and classic cocktails.
Breathe in the fresh sea air whilst relaxing in the hotel’s ‘Uma Spa’. With an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam room, relaxation areas, and a selection of therapies and massages, you can look forward to enjoying a different aspect of the spa each day. Guests also have use of a well-equipped gym.
Please note that therapies and treatments are an additional cost, payable locally.
