Tell us about The Atacama
This was a very special place for us. It was hot and dry and not a completely easy experience, but we loved the vibe. There are so many options to explore different kinds of places, we loved it.
Tell us about Torres del Paine
What a magnificent place and we really only had a little taste of what we might have seen. We knew that Patagonia would be challenging for us physically and we were able to do activities that suited us, but we're not sure if there could be more for us to do. We wouldn't be up for long challenging hikes or treks. We would like to see other parts of Patagonia, but would be looking for overland or water adventures.
Tell us about Chilean Lakes
We loved, loved Chiloe Island. It's such a beautiful place and we were sometimes content just staying at the hotel - the birding was really excellent right at the Tierra Hotel. Puerto Varas was okay, a little touristy and polished, not a big highlight of our time. (The hotel was quite worn and the food not great.) It probably would have been better to try to figure how to stay a day longer on Chiloe, but the logistics didn't quite work out. We're wondering if there are other parts of the Lake District that might be appealing.
Something Else?
We had too many days in Santiago - it was very hot and we did all that we wanted to do in the first three days we were there. At the end of the trip we had two more full days and we knew that we were kind of done with Santiago so we took a day tour up to Vina del Mar and Valparaiso. The second hotel in Santiago was really a disappointment (the only one we had the whole trip). The Ladera is not in good shape and the staff and service was not great. We would have been happy to pay more to stay somewhere better.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
We really enjoyed working with Danny and Alicia - they were helpful and responsive. There were couple of points in the itinerary that our flight reservations were not completely conducive to getting every best moment out of the three places we stayed. I would have liked a bit more advice on planning those flights. I know that you don't make such arrangements, but a bit of advice on what to book would have been helpful.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
We travel a lot and we most often plan our own trips and itineraries. We have also been on organized group trips and had travel planners give us some ideas. But this is the first time we had a trip planned for us that mapped to our desires and tastes and we really liked it ;-) If you have interest, we wrote a blog for our friends while we were in Chile: https://dandmchile.blogspot.com/.
