Tell us about Tierra Patagonia
Cannot say enough about this extraordinary place, and teh kindness and generosity of its staff. Will never forget.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?
5 nights in Tierra Patagonia was perfect because it gave us time to relax at the hotel as well as go our on their many excursions. The Cuernos half day hike was the winner IMO. The weather is so unpredictable, and there really is no app that is 100% accurate. Stick to your plan regardless of the weather because miracles happen, and sometimes unpredictable weather can produce magical experiences, like mountains suddenly bursting out of the clouds and rainbows. We packed way too much - we thought laundry was gonna be an issue but we found every hotel offered laundry except the Australis ship which was only 5 days.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
Standing on the Perito Moreno Glacier, or in the presence of Fitz Roy, or gliding through the Straits of Magellan, I felt so insignificant and tiny amidst the vastness. No picture can capture the space - the true experience remains as tacit knowledge that only one who has been there can hold, and will hold forever.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
I really don't have any recommendations - I was so impressed with your website and how incredibly comprehensive it is, as well as how knowledgeable Sydney and Cecilia both were. And I was also impressed with the local partners for the most part - the hotel in Ushuaia was a bit of a weak link but we were only there for a night and that was a long day's wait the next day to get on the ship - might have stayed another night in El Chalten and gone for an earlier flight option the day of the cruise if there was one from FTE-USH. We had only one hiccup on the entire trip, and we were incredibly lucky as to where and when it happened. We were on our 5 hour transfer (more like 3.5) from Punta Arena to Tierra Patagonia, and in a private transfer - which is the first thing - we had an entire 15 passenger van to ourselves which seemed like such a waste and would have been happy with a shared transfer (This happened several times throughout the trip) -- anyway about 90 minutes into the transfer after the bathroom stop, our van driver wasn't able to roll up the front seat passenger window, and refused to drive any further. He spoke no English so we had a language barrier, and also little or no cell signal. Fortunately, one of the couples we had been sat with at our dining table on the Australis was also on their way to Teirra in their own private transfer, and because I had exchanged contact information with them, we managed to find a spot with enough of a cell signal to call them, and I got the two drivers to talk and we managed to meet up further down the road and move into their vehicle! We were incredibly lucky - had we not me this other couple, exchanged contact info, and had the same itinerary, I'm not sure what would have happened or how long we might have been delayed.
How prepared and excited for Patagonia did you feel?
I felt like we were super prepared and certainly super excited! This was my 60th birthday trip - so a long time in the making.
