1st Dec - 6th Dec 2024
What was your most memorable moment?
Realizing the vastness of completely undisturbed land literally for as far as the eye can see. No phone lines, electrical lines, or infrastructure of humanity visible anywhere. Stunning, the earth as it once was before humans maimed it.
Which of the following best describes your adventure?
Life changing
On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely is it that you would recommend Swoop to a friend or colleague?
8 out of 10
On a scale of 0 to 10, how would you rate your trip: Puma Tracking from a Luxury Lodge?
10 out of 10
Tell us about Torres del Paine
Off the scale beauty, untouched by humans for the most parts, and windy.
Tell us about the Wildlife
The wildlife is plentiful, not quite like Africa, but certainly the best other than Africa in all of my travels. Simply the best and most diverse bird populations I have encountered including the Andean Condor. Guanacos in herds, fox everywhere (dozens), Hares (rabbits), Darwin Rhea’s in substantial numbers, and of course Pumas. The Pumas are comfortable with people (most not all) and make themselves highly visible, ignoring your presence.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?
WINDY and Cool in December so plan for plenty of layers, and a wind proof jacket (no need for a Parka). A good cold weather hat is advised, no Safari hats. You will be traipsing up hills out of the vehicle to get close to Pumas so be in shape, relatively short walks but uphill/downhill.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
I am more committed to conservation than ever before. I hope Chile manages the influx of tourists to keep the unspoiled beauty from being soiled. I also am concerned that the Pumas in the area are too comfortable with Humans and that can and does lead to Male Pumas (primarily males) trekking over the border into Argentina and not fear humans. Ranchers will shoot them on site in Argentina. Argentina apparently does not have Puma conservation on their radar.
