Tell us about Torres del Paine
For me, this is simply one of the most beautiful places in the world. It was a privilege to be here.
Tell us about Explora
I am deeply impressed by the Explora lodge. Not only was it a haven of beauty and comfort, but the people they employ are also admirable. The guides who accompanied me each day, for example, were each extremely intelligent, impressive in their knowledge and deep love for the land, and also kind, encouraging, generous, and resourceful. They brought the land to life for me even more, especially when we trekked in adverse weather and dealing with unexpected problems. The staff in the hotel were warm, welcoming, and great at problem solving as well. I found myself falling in love with the place and beginning to dream of the next chance I might have to come back.
Tell us about the Excursions
The weather was pretty adverse all but one day when I was there. Miraculously, that one good day I was able to go to the Base of the Torres - which felt like a pilgrimage. It was not an easy hike for me but a varied, fascinating, and stunningly beautiful one. Unfortunately, I was not able to do the French Valley or Grey Glacier hikes because of the tough weather on the other days while I was there. But despite the rain and wind and clouds, I enjoyed the Mirador Pehoe, Alto de Toro, and beautiful Laguna Sarmiento hikes, each a trip to a different world. Coming down the slope from Mirador de Toro was its own kind of exhilaration. The guides whom I went with, as I mentioned above, were all exceptional people, making each trek even more beautiful and meaningful in 100 ways. I felt grateful to have been able to spend the days with them.
