The first day we did the penguin trip from Punta Arenas. This was disappointing and our guide did not keep us informed. I am not sure what happened but our time slot to see the penguins apparently wasn't until 3:30-4. We were picked up early in the morning and wasted time with lunch at a nothing special place until our penguin time. But then it was impossible to catch the ferry home because it had stopped running by the time we were done with the penguins. We went home a different way but our guide did not tell us that instead of getting home at 7:30 as originally scheduled, we were on track to get back to the hotel at 10:30!!! We missed the ferry we were taking for some reason and she said it would only be another 15 minutes, but we waited over an hour. And then she said that we would stop for a bathroom break when we got off the ferry. Apparently the place she thought we'd stop was closed but she didn't tell us and it only came out when I asked because we needed a bathroom break. Then she said it would be another 2 hours!!! Luckily a restaurant appeared out of nowhere and we were able to get something to eat there. We were happy to see the penguins and the guide was nice but the lack of transparency and the ridiculous time scheduled for the penguins was completely unacceptable.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Patagonia?
The multisport at Ecocamp is a great option!
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
We also spent time at Matetic and I have comments on that. We were promised by Swoop that there were plenty of activities for our girls including horseback riding and that was not at all the case. The only activities we were offered other than the wine tasting was hiking, biking, or a van ride. And we were supposed to have an activity both days we were there but we didn't get any activity the second day. I still enjoyed the vineyard but I feel a little cheated and feel that we didn't get all we paid for. On the plus side, the guides were very good- we enjoyed the walk we did and the wine tasting. The people were nice and I was happy for the opportunity to learn about organic farming and the local plants. The food was excellent and I would recommend people visit, I would just be careful to set expectations properly.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
Peter, Carys, and Zoe were all super nice and knowledgeable. And obviously the planning was good because everything went very smoothly on our trip. My only specific feedback is that sometimes it felt like it took a while to get a response to my emails. It may be a difference in expectations but I generally would expect emails to be returned within a day. But I can't say enough positive about the people at Swoop and how nice everyone is.
Was there anything else Swoop could have done for you to help you prepare for your trip?
No, I felt prepared. The Swoop website provided extensive information. I appreciated the buff we received which is something I never would have thought to bring but turned out to be extremely useful.
