Puerto Montt, Patagonia.

Puerto Montt is the hub for anyone wanting to travel to the Chilean Lake District.


The city of Puerto Montt has a beautiful view to the Orsno and Calbuco volcanoes, located at the northern end of the Reloncaví (seno de Reloncaví), in the western area, and is protected by the Tenglo Island (Isla Tengo).

Puerto Montt is located approximately 635 miles from Santiago and has a population of about 175,000. Usually, Puerto Montt is the start destination of your trip to the fabled land of fjords, canals, islands, snow-capped volcanoes, fertile agricultural fields, green forested hills and the enchantment of Patagonian. However, for those who have arrived in Puerto Montt at the end of their trip, the city can be a welcome change of pace from the staid towns of the Chilean Lake Districtor the more remote stretches of Patagonia.

Puerto Montt has lots to offer to keep you busy before you embark on your journey into the heart of Patagonia, or return home. If you have only a few hours to spare, walk along the constanera seafront, visiting the Museo Histórico Juan Pablo II and the cathedral or alternatively walk to the Angelmó market, where you can check out the artisan stalls, dine on fresh seafood and pick up some supplies for your next journey.

If you are planning on spending a few days in Puerto Montt, you may want to consider visiting Isla Tenglo, checking out the Iglesia de los Jesuitas or the archaeological Museo de Monte Verde. The city has many cultural attractions such as the Casa de Arte Diego Rivera, the city’s art museum, and the Biblioteca Regional.
